Same sex marriage is legal in
every state of the United States of America.
I remember decades and decades ago assuming, if it ever happened, it
would be long after I left this earth.
Until recent years my
thinking – civil unions with all the benefits of marriage would be the
solution. Then, various States, one by
one, made same sex marriage legal. It
became clear marriage to a beloved one, even though that person was the
same sex, would become the law in this entire land. And it did, this week. The Supreme Court on
Friday, June 26 voted 5-4 our Constitution gives gay couples the right to
marry. WOW!
Admittedly my thinking is
crowded with a number of thoughts on what’s ahead. (My church has work to do on their guideline documents.)
The definition of marriage
has changed. How many centuries from now
will yesterday’s dictionary be worth hundreds of dollars at antique shops?
And, will I live long enough to
know children who throw temper tantrums screaming, “Why don’t I have two dads? I’d rather have another dad, than you!”
I’m laughing.
